How Difficult is Mt Amos to climb? Spoiler: It’s Not for the Faint of Heart!
What You’re in For:
Let’s cut to the chase—Mount Amos is not for the faint-hearted. It’s a technical, rock-scrambling adventure that will make you feel like a total hiking pro by the end of it. Starting at the Wineglass Bay Car Park, the 4 km return hike begins with a nice, gradual climb through an open eucalypt forest. But don’t get too comfy! Soon, you’ll hit those famous pink granite boulders, and that’s where the fun really kicks in.
Expect an all-out rock scramble with your hands, feet, and maybe even a few crawls as you make your way to the summit. It’s steep, it’s rocky, and it’s definitely a workout—but the granite rocks are surprisingly grippy! With a good pair of hiking shoes and some determination, you’ll be tackling those rocks like a champ.
The View is Worth It!
Once you conquer the final boulder and stand at the summit, the reward is jaw-dropping. You’ll be treated to breathtaking views of Wineglass Bay and the Freycinet Peninsula stretching out before you. You can also catch a glimpse of Coles Bay and the surrounding mountains. It’s the kind of 360-degree panorama that will make every tough step worth it.
The Descent: Time to Slide
Coming down is where things get… interesting. The descent can be a little trickier than the climb, but thanks to the grippy rocks, you’re in good hands (or feet). And if all else fails, don’t be shy about sliding down on your bum—it’s basically the unspoken rule of hiking Mount Amos. It takes about 2.5 – 4 hours to complete the hike, depending on your fitness level and how good you are at rock scrambling.
Tips for Tackling Mt Amos:
Footwear is Everything: Make sure you have good hiking shoes with plenty of grip. You’ll need them for those steep rock slabs!
Avoid in the Rain: Seriously, don’t even think about hiking Mount Amos in wet conditions. The rocks become dangerously slippery, and it’s not worth the risk.
Be Prepared: This is a technical hike that requires both hands and feet, so leave the bulky gear behind, bring plenty of water, and take your time.
