The Closest Winery to Freycinet National Park: Kitty's Mistake

The closest cellar door to Freycinet National Park is Kitty's Mistake, on Coles Bay Road at Wineglass Bay Estate. It sits on the shore of Moulting Lagoon, on the road every visitor drives into the park, so it is the natural first or last stop on any East Coast wine day.

Kitty's Mistake: small-batch East Coast wine

Kitty's Mistake is our own small-batch label, made with East Coast fruit alongside a local winemaker. There are no formal tastings: you order by the glass or bottle, with a local cheese platter if you like, and settle in.

Behind the retreats, a one-hectare Pinot Noir vineyard is newly planted and still growing into its first vintage. The name comes from a local legend; you can read the story behind Kitty's Mistake.

A cellar door built for long afternoons

The cellar door is in our black barn, with six-metre ceilings, a fire and a 25-metre balcony over the lagoon. Outside, a big lawn runs down to the water, with a bocce court, outdoor tables, fire pits and live music on weekends and through summer. The sunset is visible from right across the property.

Opening hours

  • Open daily, 12pm to 5.30pm. Walk-ins welcome, no booking needed.

  • On Coles Bay Road, the road into Freycinet National Park.

  • Free parking and two EV chargers on site.

Planning a wine day around Freycinet

Do the walks in the morning, when the light is soft and the car parks are quieter. Book lunch at WADE, our restaurant in the same barn, then move out to the lawn for a late-afternoon glass on the lagoon. The sunset over the water is the best way we know to end a day in Freycinet.

Where to stay

Wineglass Bay Estate has eight private waterfront retreats on 52 acres, so the cellar door and WADE are a short walk from your bed.
